Spodumene is a silicate mineral bearing both elements aluminum and lithium. Found in pegmatite deposits, this gem can grow impressively large. Available in two varieties, Kunzite and Hiddenite, spodumenes have gained recognition and popularity in recent times. Kunzite often displays pastel hues ranging from pink to purple. Hiddenite's color ranges from colorless to yellow, all the way to vivid yellowish green hues. Both Kunzite and Hiddenite are known for high clarity. Spodumenes possess a refractive index between 1.66-1.68, and a mohs hardness of 6.5-7. It clearly has the potential beauty as a gemstone, but care must be taken with the stone. Its displays 2 perfect planes of cleavage, so mounts must be selected that protect the stone from impact. Strong light sources can also diminish the color of Kunzite over a period of time. Kunzite should be stored in an area away from direct sunlight or other strong light sources to protect its color. Although Kunzite has been lab grown, its prominence in the market is low. It is more often simulated with Cubic Zirconia or lab grown sapphire. Treatments for Kunzite include irradiation and heating to improve color saturation. These treatments can be diminished by the aforementioned strong light sources. As with all stones, all treatments and origins should be disclosed with the buyer.

A note about treatments including radiation. While radiation is used in in the gemstone industry to improve color, any measurable radiation within the stone has decayed before it reaches the customer. The lack of radiation before sale is verified by governing bodies.
