Sapphire is a colorful mineral in which aluminum and oxygen are the main elements, also referred to as corundum. Though it is colorless in its purest form, it is the trace elements within the stones structure act as coloring agents. Sapphire is also grouped together with Diamond, Ruby, and Emerald as a “precious” gemstone in historic regards. Though Sapphire occurs in almost any color imaginable, it is the blue, blue/violet, and blue/green colors that are most often associated with it. Sapphire has a refractive index of 1.76-1.77, along with high toughness, no cleavage, and a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale. This makes it perfectly suited for use as everyday wear jewelry, and will have no problem being passed down from generation to generation. The vast majority of gem quality sapphire seen receives "low temperature" heat treatment to improve color and clarity. These processes add no new elements or materials to the stone, and they just only put the finishing touches on what nature started. This low temperature heating has been widely accepted by the market, and is seen as a common and permanent treatment.

With new "High Temperature" treatments and growth technologies having now come to the market, dealer knowledge must remain at the forefront. Sapphire is very commonly lab grown, and new high temperature heating techniques can introduce foreign elements into the stone, improving color. Sapphire can also have fractures within the stone filled with cobalt glass, resulting in better color and clarity. These treatments all severely diminish the value of the stone by 80-95 percent.

All Sapphire I sell has been inspected for these treatments through immersion techniques, microscopy, spectroscopy, color filter tests, and specific gravity tests. Any and all treatments I find will be disclosed to you, along with the stones origin. If further information is needed, feel free to contact.
