Although Beryls like Aquamarine and Emerald get most of the attention, less known members of the Beryl group have comparable beauty. These members include Green Beryl, Pink Beryl(morganite), Yellow Beryl(Heliodor), Red Beryl(bixbite), and colorless Beryl(Goshenite). Many of the properties of the Beryl family remain the same for these members, including a refractive index of 1.57-1.58, and a mohs hardness ranging between 7.5-8. Care should also be taken not to strike beryl on any hard surface, as it can be brittle. Though Green Beryl posesses the same chemical constituents that color Emerald(chromium and vanadium), it does not contain the same amount of these coloring elements, resulting in a lower saturation of color. Morganites soft pink and peachy hues result from manganese, the same element that colors the deep red of Bixbite. Heliodors golden yellow color comes from the element iron, arranged in such a way that it is yellow instead of the blue that distinguishes Aquamarines color. Goshenite lacks many of the trace coloring elements, so it appears clear. Common treatments for these include heating to remove unwanted colors, and is often undetectable unless liquid inclusions are present. Though all members of the Beryl family can be lab grown, lab grown Emerald is the most common. Care must be taken by the seller to ensure that all treatments and origins are disclosed.
